The Agricultural Lending Institute

ALI Program

Program History

ALI was first launched in 2002, and will be hosting its 8th Annual meeting in June 2009.  ALI curriculum was designed to address one of the biggest challenges facing the world of agribusiness today, which is finding qualified people to fill agricultural lending positions.  With the downsizing and consolidation that exists in banking today, training of new hires and continuing education courses for existing employees cannot be provided in a concise, time efficient and cost effective way by every institution that requires it.

Program Details / Who would benefit?

The goal of ALI is to provide quality instruction that prepares the participants to be informed and effective leaders in agricultural lending, to promote the success of their financial institutions and the growth of agriculture in California and the nation.
ALI is designed to provide training for those lending professionals granting and maintaining agricultural loan portfolios. ALI is a two-year program with the first year focusing on the loan process and those agencies and institutions that provide complementary and cooperative services to lending institutions. The second year is planned to discuss appraisal concepts, problem loans, lender liability and other topics relevant to the lending process.

The first year curriculum covers everything from accounting principles and tax analysis to budget review, field inspections, and nurturing on-going customer relationships.

The second year program builds on this foundation with in-depth information on managing loan risk, succession planning and avoiding structuring, documentation and loan monitoring pitfalls.

Students will receive the added benefit of a case study that each teacher will use to illustrate the practical application of the tools and concepts discussed in class.  In this way, the participants will have a “real world” example to refer to when interacting with the company's clients and prospective customers.
